"The best meal I've had in England. Full stop."

There are restaurants you visit and restaurants you remember. Moor Hall is the second kind. Set in a restored 16th-century hall on the edge of a lake in Lancashire, it has the quiet confidence of somewhere that doesn't need to shout. The food speaks clearly enough on its own.

Chef Mark Birchall's cooking is rooted in the landscape around him — the menu reads like a love letter to the North West, with ingredients sourced from the kitchen garden, the surrounding farms, and the nearby coast. A starter of cured trout with buttermilk and dill was the kind of dish that makes you put your fork down and just think for a moment.

The room is beautiful without being fussy — stone walls, candlelight, views over the lake. It has the feeling of somewhere that was always meant to be a restaurant, even though it wasn't. The pacing of the meal is unhurried in the best possible way; you leave two and a half hours later wondering where the time went.

Staying overnight in one of the rooms is worth considering — breakfast the next morning is a gentler, more relaxed version of the same kitchen's sensibility, and waking up to the lake is its own reward. The Barn next door offers a more casual menu if the full tasting experience feels like too much for one trip.

Worth knowing

  • Cooking that feels genuinely rooted in its place
  • The setting — lake, hall, gardens — is extraordinary
  • Overnight rooms make the whole experience even better
  • The Barn offers a more accessible entry point

Bear in mind

  • Getting there requires a car — it's not on a train line
  • Tasting menu only in the main restaurant

Sketch

9 Conduit Street, Mayfair, London

Contemporary European

Sketch is one of those places that could easily be all spectacle and no substance — the egg-pod loos alone have their own Instagram following. But the food in the Lecture Room and Library is genuinely extraordinary: three Michelin stars earned and worn lightly, with a kitchen that seems to find the whole thing rather fun.

The Ledbury

127 Ledbury Road, Notting Hill, London

Modern European

The Ledbury reopened after a lengthy hiatus with something to prove, and it's proved it. Brett Graham's cooking has always been technically precise, but there's a looseness to the new menu — a willingness to be playful — that wasn't always there before. The result is one of the most enjoyable meals in London right now.
